Rev James Hanson McMechen (1813 - 1889) of West Virginia was a local historian who in 1887 published the book "Legends of the Ohio Valley." According to McMechen the purpose of the book is to "present to the public a faithful record of some of the most thrilling events connected with the border wars carried on for several years between the whites and the Indians in the Valley of the Upper Ohio." Truth stranger than fiction ... includes true stories of Lewis Wetzel, Simon Girty and more.In describing one encounter famously called "McColloch's Leap", McMechen writes: "He put spurs to his horse and soon became completely hemmed in on three sides, and the fourth was almost a perpendicular precipice of 150 feet descent, with Wheeling creek at its base. Supporting his rifle on his left hand, and carefully adjusting his reins with the other, he urged his horse to the brink of the bluff and then made the leap which decided his fate. In the next moment the noble steed, still bearing his intrepid rider in safety, was at the foot of the precipice.
